Family photo session in Lanikai Beach, Kailua, Hawai'i

If you ask me my favorite type of session to photograph, the answer is almost always the same: a Honolulu sunrise photo session with a family and little kids.

Most families initially reach out asking for sunset photos, which makes complete sense. Sunset feels dreamy and romantic, and it’s what many people picture when they think about Hawaii family photos. But after photographing families in Honolulu for years, I often find myself gently recommending sunrise instead — especially for families with young children or visitors coming from the mainland.

And honestly, sunrise usually ends up being the more relaxed experience for everyone.

One of the biggest reasons is simply how peaceful the beach feels in the early morning. At sunrise, the beaches are quiet, the air is cooler, and there’s space for kids to run around freely without distractions or crowds nearby. It almost feels like the island is still waking up.

That calm energy changes everything.

Instead of spending the session trying to avoid people in the background or navigating busy beaches, we get to slow down and focus on connection. Kids can explore, parents can breathe a little easier, and the entire session tends to feel more natural and playful.

The light during a Honolulu sunrise photo session is also incredibly beautiful. Morning light has a softness to it that photographs so well — soft pastel skies, gentle glow on skin tones, and dreamy colors that feel timeless and effortless. Beaches like Kahala or Lanikai especially come alive in the early morning light.

But beyond the aesthetics, sunrise simply works better for many families logistically too.

If you’re visiting Hawaii from the mainland, jet lag is often actually helpful at the beginning of your trip. Many families are already awake early anyway, so meeting at sunrise feels much easier than trying to keep little ones happy and energized through a late evening session after a full beach day.

And when the session is done? You still have your entire day ahead of you.

I love that families can finish their session by around 7:30 or 8am, grab breakfast together afterward, and continue enjoying their vacation without feeling like photos took over the day.

For little kids especially, mornings are usually when they’re happiest. They’ve rested, the temperatures are cooler, and they haven’t yet reached that overtired point that can sometimes happen by sunset. As a parent myself, I know how quickly moods can shift after skipped naps, long pool days, or late dinners while traveling.

Some of the smoothest, most joy-filled sessions I’ve photographed have happened at sunrise — kids splashing in calm water, sleepy cuddles turning into laughter, parents fully present instead of stressed about schedules or crowds.

That doesn’t mean sunset sessions aren’t beautiful too. They absolutely are, and they can be perfect for certain families, couples, or older kids who thrive later in the day.

But if you’re trying to decide between sunrise or sunset for your family photos in Honolulu, sunrise is often the experience I recommend most.

It’s quieter. Slower. Softer.

And there’s something really special about starting the day together barefoot on the beach while the island is still peaceful and golden around you.

If you’re planning a Honolulu sunrise photo session for your family, I’d love to help create something relaxed, natural, and meaningful — photos that feel like your family exactly as you are in this season of life.
